I’m so excited to have my dining room finished up! My goal was to take the space from bland and sparse to cozy and classic on a budget. I think that was accomplished.
Here’s what the room looked like before:
Although I did not end up finishing in the six-week time frame due to a lost shipment with my light fixture and some indecision on my end with my table stain color, I’m still thrilled with the way it turned out!
Most of the items on the shelves I built were items I had on hand already. I love ‘shopping my house’ and moving things around to see what works before I go out and get new items. Although I did get some great prints that I love from Jenny’s Print Shop. The print on the top shelf is Flora, and I have August in a frame on a lower shelf.
I also picked up a pitcher from the Hearth & Hand with Magnolia collection from Target. I probably could have gotten nearly everything from that collection. A few other things from the shelves are items I already had from the Magnolia Market that are no longer available, some vintage finds, and even some Target dollar section buys. I moved my letter board from Letterfolk to these shelves as well. I love customizing the messaging on the letter boards!
As you can see, I had to use a ceiling hook to center the light fixture over the table. Eventually, I will probably hire an electrician to properly center it, but for now, I think it does the trick. I bought the fixture from Overstock while it was on sale and got a great deal. It came with an oversized Edison bulb that adds a nice vintage-looking touch.
I’m pleased with the way the table I built turned out. I ended up sanding off some of the wood stains from my original post. I had so many layers you could barely see the grain, and now it is clearly visible.
The chairs are from Overstock as well. I originally was going to with upholstered chairs, but I decided wanted to go with chairs that would not obstruct the view of the shelving or table pedestal.
I ended up switching my rug choice from my original mood board. I went with the Vintage Castle Medallion Rug in Slate from Rugs USA. It was a great deal for a nearly 8 ft by 8 ft rug.
I moved my faux fiddle leaf fig tree I had purchased a few months ago from World Market to this location. I think it fits in well here.
Cost Breakdown
Here’s a breakdown of what I spent on the room:
- Shelf lumber/materials: $150
- Curtains: $85
- Table lumber: $120
- Rug: $125
- Light fixture: $77
- Dining chairs: $170
- Accessories: $100
- Total: $827
Considering nearly everything in the room is new, except the paint on the wall and accessories I moved in from around my home, this is a cost-effective update.
